Review - It Could Happen Again

It Could Happen Again, Sonia Rumzi, 2011, ASIN B004TMB64Y (Kindle e-book)
This novelette looks at the world of domestic violence. It is not a pretty picture.
Set in present-day Boston, Truvi and her four boys are living with Jake, her boyfriend (two of the children are his). Noor, her friend and co-worker, is the recipient of several frantic, late night phone calls from Truvi saying that Jake is drunk (again), he has grabbed her by the throat, and pushed her against the wall, etc. Noor lets Truvi and her children live with her for a while. After some time, Truvi tells Noor that they are going back to Jake. Crying on the phone, Jake has promised to do better in the future. Noor tells Truvi that there will be no more rushing over to her place. If she wants to leave Jake, Noor will help her any way she can, but Truvi has to make the first move.
As the months go on, Truvi's normally vivacious personality disappears. She barely says two sentences to Noor in weeks, she brings her lunch, so she can stay at her desk, and not have to talk to Noor, and she starts wearing scarves and turtlenecks to work (to hide the neck bruises). One day, Truvi announces to Noor that she has found an apartment, away from Jake. Noor helps them move in; there are now five boys (the latest child is Jake's). Things are relatively stable, for a while.
Jake continues to demand his visitation rights, and the courts continue to agree with them. Bringing the boys over for one such court-mandated visit, Jake walks out of his condo, carrying a shotgun. He makes it clear to Truvi that he intends to use it. Demanding that Truvi open the car doors (everyone is still inside the car), Jake seems surprised when the police come and arrest him. Searching his condo, the police find a pigsty, a large arsenal of weapons and lots of Nazi paraphernalia. The police criticize Truvi for sending the children into such an atmosphere; she tells them, in no uncertain terms, that she had no choice. Now that Jake is in custody, is Truvi's nightmare over? Is this one of those stories that will end only when someone is dead?
This is very unpleasant, but very good, reading. The author does a really good job at putting a human face on a subject like domestic violence. It is very much recommended.

The Female Brain by Louann Brizendine Review

The Female Brain is Louann Brizendine's groundbreaking research on what makes women's brain different from men's and what are the biological and psychological components standing behind that difference. Louann Brizendine, M. D., is an acknowledged neurobiologist and a clinical professor currently heading the self-established Women's Mood and Hormone Clinic. The Female Brain is Brizendine's first book published in 2007 and followed by The Male Brain in 2010.
The Female Brain by Louann Brizendine is a thorough scientific study on female mental and emotional performance from childhood through adolescence and young adulthood to the post menopause period. With the main "sex hormones" such as "no cuddling" testosterone and "fluffy, purry kitty" oxytocin being the key characters of the book, the author blows the traditional feministic myth that bringing-up and evolutionary factor are the only "parties at fault" for the different mental structures of women and men.
The scientific language is smoothly moderated by playful and vivid style throughout the book thus making it readable and clear for understanding. However, this book from Louann Brizendine is not a pickup advice oriented book and has only an indirect focus on relationships thus only advanced daters can find it useful and applicable.
Let me try to mark out the essential points in a brief Female Brain review.
THE BAD
The content is too complicated material for beginner and intermediate daters. Not targeted at the dating advice market, the Female Brain is more of a scientific and psychological value. There is a lot of theory, and almost no practice.
THE GOOD
Through a strong research backed up by serious medical and scientific resources the Female Brain draws up a valid substantiation of what makes women behave this or that way in various situations. It will definitely help you understand a woman's specific reactions that you would otherwise consider illogical. This product is ideal for the advanced learners who want to overpass superficial relationships and shock the opposite sex by a unique "mind-reading" ability.
THE BOTTOM LINE
What are the brain chemicals to make men think about sex every few minutes whereas women's mind may afford a sex thought only once a day in average; why do women talk about three times more than men do; what's the physiological "key" to give an almost unlimited access to women's tears as compared with men's innate restraint? These and many more amazing facts are revealed in The Female Brain Louann Brizendine reading which will definitely shape a better understanding of any woman's sexual and psychological character. However, it's worth noting again that all these advantages will be accessible only for an advanced reader.

What to Expect When You Are Expecting, Heidi E. Murkoff

The first thing that my husband did when I told him that I was pregnant was to go to the library and buy the book 'What to Expect When You Are Expecting', by Heidi E. Murkoff.
The book dedicates a chapter for each month and explains the changes that you can expect to experience during each month, the tests that you will have done and pretty much everything that you want to know about. It is a great book. I have to say that I read it from the first page to the last one, but it is also very handy for checking a few things along the way. I highly recommend it to anyone who is considering to get pregnant, start reading it before and it will give you a good idea of how to take care of yourself for the pregnancy (the earlier the better).
The book also shows you different exercise that you can practice during the pregnancy and that will help you to have an easier labour. During my pregnancy I found that keeping active helped me a lot. I didn't suffer any liquid retention or swollen ankles and I think it is because I walked every day until the day that I gave birth. Walking is one of the best exercises that you can do during pregnancy, you do not need any equipment, you are outdoors, you can control the intensity easily, you can do it with friends, you can chat at the same time and even go shopping. And the best part is that it helps to your baby to put himself in the right position for birthing.
After I had my baby a friend bought 'What to Expect During the First Year' as a present for me. I have to admit that I haven't been able to read it as much in detail as I did it with the other one, mainly because once you have the baby it is very difficult to find time to read... so my recommendation is read both during the pregnancy, hehe. It seems very good too, there is one chapter dedicated for each month of the baby's life.
During my pregnancy I read a lot of book and I found many that I could recommend, but if you have to buy just one then I would suggest to buy 'What to expect when you are expecting'.

Book Review: If I Bring You Roses, by Marisel Vera

Award-winning, first-time novelist Marisel Vera pens an honest, heart-felt, often sad tale of an idealistic, naive Puerto Rican girl named Felicidad who goes to America to be with the man she loves.
The story, told from an author omniscient point of view, begins in the early 1940's in the Puerto Rican countryside and ends about ten years later in Chicago. It follows Felicidad's life from the time she's a young jíbara living in appalling poverty in the mountains to the time she gets married and moves to America.
Young Felicidad lives in a tiny shack with her parents and siblings. Her father works in the fields and can barely support them. At times, Felicidad must be happy with only one meal a day. Their living conditions are so deplorable, she must tie her locks in a bun so that flying roaches in the latrine will not make a nest in her hair. Her sister dies because they can't afford medical care. But worst of all, her mother is losing her mind. Unable to face the situation they're in, one day her mother climbs naked onto the roof. The priest, of course, says she's possessed by the devil.
Then Felicidad is sent to another town to live with her uncle and his wife, who own a panaderia. Though her uncle is kind and quiet most of the times, her aunt finds every opportunity to criticize Felicidad and treat her like a servant. Felicidad, naïve and good-natured, does her best to put up with her. She slaves in the panaderia and remains submissive, but she dreams of a prince who will love her and 'rescue' her one day. Years pass and Felicidad doesn't hear a word from her family. She misses them terribly and would like nothing more than to visit them, but she wonders if the feeling is reciprocated and, afraid of rejection by her own flesh and blood, she stays away from them.
One day, a handsome man walks into the panaderia and Felicidad is swept off her feet. Aníbal Acevedo, a man of the world as far as women go, is taken by Felicidad's innocent beauty. To everyone's shock, a few days later, he asks her to marry him. Felicidad is ecstatic, filled with idealistic illusions of happiness, but is Aníbal capable of fulfilling his dreams, when he has another woman waiting for him in Chicago?
Marisel Vera's prose flows beautifully. In a skillful, often blunt manner, she paints a painfully realistic picture of the jíbaro. In a way, Felicidad's story is a Cinderella story but with an unusual twist. The two protagonists, Felicidad and Aníbal, come to live through the pages, each one so very distinctive from the other. It is especially fascinating to be inside Aníbal's mind and see the world from his perspective, a brutal contrast to Felicidad. Their love story is bitter sweet. But most of all, the author gives us a powerfully sad glimpse of the jíbaro in the 1950's in Chicago, their difficult lives and tribulations, the prejudice they had to confront. Vera is definitely a new Latina voice to be reckoned with, and I look forward to reading more of her work.

The Heart Healer, By: Boma Akainy - Book Review

God gave us The Ten Commandments, and if you multiply those terse rules by life's situations, you come up with the chapters listed in Boma Akainy's book titled, The Heart Healer. In her straight-talking, honest, sensitive and knowledgeable style, Boma Akainy "Tells it like it is," without holding back on anything she wants to convey, nor spinning her words into more socially acceptable terminology. She is direct, tough, sincere and kind, while also being wise, loving, supportive and passionate about her advice to women.
The Heart Healer is postured as a book for women of all races and ages, however most pertinent to young African-American women. Boma Akainy has her fortitude gained by first-hand experience along with many interviews, all filtered by her obvious conviction of faith, and love of God. "With age comes wisdom," and "If I only knew then what I know now" are phrases which come to my mind as I paged her many examples of life's events which at times are confusing to all of us; but later seem so obvious as to what action or feeling should have been exercised. From explaining the physiological changes which occur to all women during menstruation to citing examples of feminine behavior in relationships, marriage, and work, each topic is boldly and honestly articulated with clarity and conviction. Even when it comes to sex, she gets to the point in a direct, blunt and unashamed way. I found myself in agreement with everything she said. Boma Akainy has a powerful way about her, that's for sure. She doesn't hold back any punches when she tells it like it is, nor does she mix her words. Her messaging is clear and straight forward; her main point, "Girl, take control of your life."
How do you handle a husband that cheats? Or a man that is bad in bed? How do you tell a mother-in-law to get out of your marriage's problems and situations; to mind her own business? What do you do when things are out of control in your life and what you want is wrong and the right thing is too hard to do? These situations are clearly explained as Boma Akainy provides a "road map" to guide you through so many of life's inevitable challenges.
Written from and for a woman's point-of-view, The Heart Healer is a perfect book to buy as a gift for any female friend going through tough times, even if that "friend" is you! Being your own best friend is one of Boma's chapters, and from a self-help point-of-view The Heart Healer is invaluable in reconstructing your life after some significant loss. Although a disclaimer of being "For Women Eyes Only" should appear on the cover, I have seen men also learn about becoming a better person by reading this book as well. Let's face it; it takes two to make love.

Plan My Baby Review: Does It Really Works?

Plan My Baby is a book that contains tried-and-tested methods that can help couples choose the gender they want for their baby. It is authored by midwife Alicia Pennington, who did extensive research about various baby gender selection techniques and hand-picked those that proved best-she even tested them personally twice and enjoyed success both times. The information she had uncovered and is sharing aims to assist couples planning to conceive to get the boy or the girl they've been dreaming of.
The Basics
Before going straight to the Plan My Baby review, it's important to understand at least the basics of Pennington's work. The book values the differences between the female (Y chromosome) and the male (X chromosome) sperms. These hold the key to how a baby's gender can be determined; if you know what they are, you can modify particular environmental factors that are known to influence which sperm reaches and fertilizes the egg first. To illustrate, the female sperm swims slower compared to the male sperm; meanwhile, the male sperm has a shorter life span than the female sperm. Pennington then gives a three-step guide that couples can use to get the baby gender of their choice.
The Pros
Although the book is not perfect, there are many things couples will truly appreciate about the methods Pennington highlights.
The book recommends only natural, risk-free methods. There are no drugs involved in any of the techniques mentioned, making them completely safe to the mother, father and their baby. Couples who are not willing to take risks on their health will find this book a great option.
The book is not run-of-the-mill, nor is it a random post suggesting the personal opinions of inexperienced individuals. It's created by an expert after years of extensive research. Pennington rendered services in midwifery for several years before becoming a full-time baby gender author and consultant. She also attended multiple courses centering on preconception before writing her book.
The book's guide is comprehensive yet easy to follow. Pennington cuts to chase and presents only the proven techniques so couples can get an accurate guide. What's more, it is written in a systematic and concise manner that is simple to understand-it even has graphics to assist you in the task of conceiving a boy or a girl, whichever you and your partner prefer, without difficulty.
And lastly, the book offers a 60-day full money-back guarantee. That goes to show that Pennington is very confident of her methods and has enjoyed excellent feedback from her clients.
The Cons
Like what's been said earlier, the book is not perfect. It has its share of downsides.
Like most of the best systems out there, 100% success rate cannot be guaranteed. While many of those who purchased the book and used its tips came out happy and satisfied with the results, it reiterates that there is really no surefire way to get the baby gender you want.
And finally, the book can only be found online.
In sum, this Plan My Baby review finds that Pennington's book offers invaluable information that may prove vital to getting the baby gender you want. While it's wise not to get your hopes up in any endeavor, following the methods presented will do you no harm.

Book Review Of Anita Jain's Marrying Anita

Marriage stands as a testimony to the cultures and customs of any society. There is no denying the fact that it is an integral part of Indian culture. Have you as an unmarried Indian woman, around and above 20 years of age, at some point or the other, faced both covert as well as inquisitive questions about getting married?
Family celebrations, any visits to relatives and you are showered with queries that range from the direct "So when are you getting married?", the veiled "So what do you plan to do next?", the emotional "Your poor parents are waiting to finish off their duties. Hope you understand and be a good daughter to them," and even the seemingly helpful and friendly "Tell me what kind of boy you want. I will search for you dear! Trust me - you will be married within a year without fail!" Never mind the fact that you may or may not be interested!
Your parents are bombarded and you are constantly probed. The more the delay, the more suspicious and worried are the kith and kin, resulting in a more vicious groom-hunt. So what happens if you are a 30-something Indian origin lady, who has lived the most part of your life in the West? This is the basic foundation of 'Marrying Anita'.
The story is told from the protagonist's viewpoint (in this case, presumably Anita herself) and it follows her as she travels from the USA to India in order to find a suitable husband. Of course, she has gone through the dating routines of her adopted country, but has yet failed to find 'that special someone' due to varied reasons.
Anita finds Life to be quite different and yet interestingly similar to Life, as she knew it, back in the States. She can draw many parallels between both. She is introduced to several prospective grooms but somehow things still don't fall into place.
While on this journey, she meets many people from different walks of life and each one seems to have a different way of handling their respective marriages. Some appear to be mere compromises due to societal pressures; Some seem to be genuinely happy and content while still others seem to be hiding behind fragile facades, which may come crumbling down at any moment and catch you unawares. She realizes that the set of rules that were applicable to the previous generations of our mothers and grandmothers, seem to no longer satisfy the young and urbane Indian woman. Anita comprehends that today's modern Indian woman is smart enough to set her own rules, bold enough to follow them and what is more, suave enough to pull it off too.
She understands also that an increasingly large number of young women are no more satisfied with playing second-fiddle to their husbands and in-laws. No longer does marriage mean abandoning ones' dreams and aspirations. Rather she expects and in fact, sometimes even demands that her marriage be aligned with her goals.
In an era when, even home-grown damsels are increasingly feeling uncomfortable with the idea of an "arranged marriage", the NRI has her own issues. But then does she really? Are her problems and dilemmas actually very different from that faced by the middle-class, educated, working and independent desi girl of the modern and ever-developing India?
These are just some of the questions that arise while reading this engaging book. It has an open and light-hearted air, without being condescending or presumptuous, which makes it a pleasant read. Does Anita find answers to all her confusions and a solution to her problem? Is she successful in meeting the man of her dreams? Read 'Marrying Anita' to find out! Chances are that you will relate to it.

Review of Diary of a Beverly Hills Matchmaker, by Marla Martenson

Have you ever wondered what it's like to be the head matchmaker of a high-class Beverly Hills dating service? In this her candid and witty memoir, Marla Martenson takes you on a humorous ride through the ups and downs of her life working for such a place, as she struggles with the often unreasonable demands of her wealthy clientele.
"I honestly had no idea how shallow, picky, selfish, and entitled some clients could be. After six years of feedback, demands, and expectations, I'm still thrown for a loop now and then," says Martenson. But what can you do when her clients pay $40,000 and up to find the right woman?
The author starts off by showing us what a regular day for her is like, answering annoying emails and trying to understand her clients' often incredible and unreasonable requests, as they continually find faults with their gorgeous, perfect Barbie-doll dates.
After this initial glimpse into her 'regular day,' Martenson goes back in time to recount how she got started, working at restaurant jobs and waiting on rude celebrities such as Joan Collins, who once barked at her for forgetting a fork. "For all my work, she left me a $2 tip on a $120 tab. The woman was clearly typecast as Alexis, right?" says the author.
She also talks about her dreams of becoming an actress, her marriage, divorce and remarriage to the perfect guy, her father's death and, finally, taking charge of her life. Eventually all fell into place and she started earning good money making commercials and getting small parts in films and print modeling work. She even got a couple of lines in the Mel Gibson film, What Women Want. Then, finally, how she got started as a recruiter for the dating service, on the lookout for what she calls "a fresh supply of goddesses" and her life as an author-a calling she never suspected she had.
The book is full of interesting anecdotes about Martenson's work in Hollywood with the stars. The writing is simple, straight forward, witty and honest. This is the perfect fun, beach read. I like the author's satiric slant on beauty and the mystery of dating and relationships, as well as the shallowness of Hollywood and the pressure put on women to look good. The book, though a light read, makes you think about society and the role of women and men in it, and explores interesting issues of gender.

Ellen Reid Smith: My Inspiration to Roping a Kick Ass Internet Marketing Career!

Ellen Reid Smith brought the cowgirls of yesteryear to my attention in an incredibly inspiring book, Cowgirl Smarts, How to Rope a Kick-Ass Life.
The book was given to me by an old cowgirl friend of mine on a much-anticipated and well-earned camping trip. We were sitting at the campfire watching the embers of the fire go out as we finished up our lengthy conversation on the ups and downs, and ins and outs of our lives.
I was at a crossroads in my life and needed something or someone to give me something to hold on to. I needed to be inspired, but more importantly, I needed to be ignited.
"Here's a book that is right up your alley," my friend said, read it in bed, it will wake you up." She handed me Cowgirl Smarts, How to rope a Kick Ass Life. Well it did more than wake me up. It jolted me into high gear.
From the moment I picked up that book, I knew my life had reached a pivotal moment. The wall of Jericho fell from around me. All my answers were in the palm of my hand in black and white in Ellen Reid Smith's written words. I read it from cover to cover. I didn't want the book to end. I wanted to read more and more.
To inspire and guide me throughout my life, I have read a library of self-help, inspirational and motivational books from the most brilliant minds of our times. I got a lot out of those books but they never grabbed me by the scruff like Cowgirl Smarts, How to Rope a Kick Ass Life.
Not only is it brilliantly written, it is captivating, innovating, motivating, inspiring and true.
Ellen Reid Smith writes about a group of individual pioneering cowgirls, who against all odds, with their cowgirl smarts, broke down barriers and succeeded in their quests. They had nothing but their intense desire, their passion, and their willingness to weather many storms in an era when women had no rights and were subordinate to cowboys.
Ellen then goes into detail about the lessons learned from each cowgirl in order for us to grasp the same principles, and keep on keeping on.
These pioneering women, just to mention a few for recognition purposes and to put their names before you include, Elizabeth Johnson Williams, Bertha Kaepernick Blanchett, Wilhemenia Mathews, Adele Von Ohl Parker, Fanny Seabride, Prairie Rose Henderson, Dora Rhodes Waldrop, Lucille Mulhall, Fox Hastings.
Why did they affect me like they did? I think it's because they acted and elbowed their way in on our behalf. They made the impossible possible. They made it so we have no barriers.
The question now is who's going to write about us? Having said that, then who's going to take our place? We have more at our disposal than any of these cowgirls would have imagined. They would be riding high on the crest of a wave with the reins between their teeth in this era.
If Ellen Reid Smith were to write about us what would she write? Do we have enough material between us to put it in a book to ignite the women of the future? What's our purpose? What are we going to do with our God-given intensity?
Perhaps we should work on that material and expect our names to go on into the next century for another cowgirl to pick up as she leaves a burnt out campfire.
Ellen Reid Smith, by researching and sharing the stories of the pioneering cowgirls of the wild-west has given me more than I would have possibly imagined. She thought me how not to be stopped. Thank you Ellen, I owe you one.
